Sixty-four percent (64%) of Illinois voters say that former Governor Rod Blagojevich received a fair impeachment trial in the Illinois Senate. A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that just 23% disagree and 13% are not sure. Seventy-seven percent (77%) support the decision to remove Blagojevich from office, and 74% agree with the decision to ban him from running for office in the future. Forty-four percent (44%) say the scandal caused them to lose faith in state government. Forty-three percent (43%) said it did not. Among those who lost faith, 52% say it’s at least somewhat likely that new Governor Pat Quinn will restore their faith. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Sign up now. If it's in the news, it's in our polls). However, Quinn will face challenges of his own: 76% say he’s likely to raise taxes, and only six percent (6%) disagree. Still, benefitting from being anybody but Blagojevich, the new governor starts out with extraordinary job approval ratings. Eighty percent (80%) rate his performance so far as good or excellent. That’s even better than President Obama does in his home state. Seventy-three percent (73%) of Illinois voters say they approve of the job the president is doing, inlcuding 52% who strongly approve. In December after allegations surfaced in news reports that Blagojevich was putting Obama's vacant Senate seat up to the highest bidder, 84% of Illinois voters said he should resign, and 79% thought he should end up in jail. Forty-eight percent (48%) of voters in the state approve of the stimulus plan working its way through Congress, and 85% expect it to become law in Obama's first 100 days in office. Still, even in Illinois, 45% say it’s at least somewhat likely the plan will make things worse, not better. Nationally, 50% hold that view.
