New Hampshire Governor John Lynch is one incumbent who appears to be facing little danger so far if he seeks reelection this year. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of New Hampshire voters shows Lynch beating his only two announced Republican challengers by comfortable double-digit margins. In a survey in September, the Democratic governor’s closest competitor was a candidate who isn’t even in the race, former Senator John Sununu. He trailed Lynch by just five points, 48% to 43%. Former Attorney General Kelly Ayotte remains the GOP hopeful with the best chance of beating likely Democratic candidate Paul Hodes in New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate contest this year. Lynch, who was reelected in 2008 with 70% of the vote, has yet to announce but is expected to seek an unprecedented fourth two-year gubernatorial term. He leads Dover businessman Jack Kimball by 19 points, 51% to 32%. Four percent (4%) like some other candidate, and 12% are undecided. In September, Lynch led Kimball 52% to 31%. The incumbent governor posts a 23-point lead – 53% to 30% - against conservative activist Karen Testerman. In that match-up, five percent (5%) prefer some other candidate, and 12% are not sure. Lynch carries voters not affiliated with either political party by more than two-to-one against either of the GOP hopefuls. Twenty-eight percent (28%) of New Hampshire voters have a very favorable opinion of Lynch, which 15% view him very unfavorably. Kimball is seen very favorably by five percent (5%) and very unfavorably by eight percent (8%). Testerman’s very favorables total five percent (5%), her very unfavorables nine percent (9%). At this point in a campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the number of people with strong opinions more significant than the total favorable/unfavorable numbers. Four-out-of-10 voters in the state don’t know enough about Kimball and Testerman to venture even a soft favorable or unfavorable opinion. Just three percent (3%) have no opinion of Lynch. Fifty-eight percent (58%) approve of the job Lynch is doing as governor, down eight points from September. This number includes 23% who strongly approve. Thirty-eight percent (38%) disapprove of his job performance, with 19% who strongly disapprove. Rasmussen Reports has released data on the 2010 governor’s races in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas. New data also has been released on Senate races in Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Connecticut, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, California and the special election in Massachusetts.
