A detailed examination of recent Rasmussen polling on General Petraeus's testimony shows that there is likely to be little short term or long term impact from his report and recommendations to Congress. Overall, the American people are almost evenly divided on whether they favor (43%) or oppose (38%) his recommendation to withdraw 30,000 soldiers from Iraq and leave 130,000 troops in place through at least the summer. Republicans support the plan by better than 3-1 and Democrats oppose it by more than 2-1. Independents are evenly divided. Given this virtually divided American public, it is not surprising that the President's approval stayed constant at 39% during the week of the hearings and his disapproval was also stayed level at 59% the entire week except for Friday when it was at 60%. Also Senator Hillary Clinton modestly improved her standing vis a vis former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani turning a 3% deficit in late August into a narrow 1% lead this week. Further, Senator Clinton's lead over former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson was virtually identical this week to what Rasmussen found two weeks earlier. Senator Clinton's 4% lead in late August increased ever so slightly to 5% this week. Finally, the new Rasmussen data show Senator Clinton leading Senator John McCain by 1% and leading former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney by a much more substantial 9% margin.
