A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 61% of Americans would like to see U.S. troops brought home from Iraq within a year. For the second week in a row, that figure is up two points from the week before. Over the last eleven weeks, the number wanting troops home within a year has ranged from a low of 57% to a high of 64%. Twenty-six percent (26%) now want the troops brought home immediately. That’s unchanged from a week ago. Looking at the other end of the spectrum, 33% now want troops to remain in Iraq until the mission is complete. That’s down two points from a week ago. A separate survey found that confidence in the overall War on Terror has increased over the past month. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of women want troops out of Iraq within a year. Fifty-five percent (52%) of men share that view. That gender gap is a bit larger than a week ago. All questions concerning Iraq reveal stark partisan differences. Eighty-three percent (83%) of Democrats want the troops to come home within a year. Sixty-three percent (63%) of Republicans believe the troops should remain until the mission is complete. As for those not affiliated with either major party, 63% want the troops home within a year. Thirty percent (30%) take the opposite view and say they should remain. Rasmussen Reports has been tracking this question weekly since late August. The survey was conducted in partnership with Fox Television Stations, Inc. See survey questions and toplines.
