26% Have Worked With Someone They Thought Capable Of Mass Violence

Twenty-six percent (26%) of employed adults say they have seriously thought that someone in their workplace was capable of mass violence, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Most working adults (64%), however, say they have not seriously thought a co-worker would be capable of such violence. Another 11% are undecided.

One-in-three men (33%) say they have held that thought before, compared to only 17% of women.

Forty-three percent (43%) of government workers say they have felt a fellow employee was capable of mass violence, more than double the number among those who work for private companies.

Fortunately, 49% of employed adults report their workplaces have procedures in place to identify troubled employees, but 35% say their workplaces do not. Sixteen percent (16%) are not sure whether or not their firms have such procedures.

The majority of employees of the government (66%) and private companies (52%) say their workplaces have procedures to help spot troubled employees.

Just 22% of all Americans believe stricter gun control laws would reduce the number of workplace shooting sprees. Most (58%) adults say stricter laws on gun ownership would not help this problem, while another 19% are undecided.

More than a quarter of women (27%) say stricter gun control laws would help, but only 17% of men agree.

Separate polling shows that just 39% of Americans now say the United States needs stricter gun control.

A June survey found that 57% of Americans say gun sales are up in the United States because of a fear of increased government restriction on gun ownership. Forty-three percent (43%) of Americans say it is Very Likely that the Obama Administration will try to implement stricter gun control laws.

Seventy-five percent (75%) of adults say Americans are becoming ruder and less civilized.

Sixty percent (60%) of voters nationwide say the recent shootings at Fort Hood, Texas should be investigated by military authorities as a terrorist act rather than by civilian authorities as a criminal act. Seventy-three percent (73%) of Texas voters say Major Nadal Malik Hasan should receive the death penalty if he is convicted of the massacre at Fort Hood.

Sixty-one percent (61%) of Americans favor the death penalty. But 23% oppose capital punishment.
