Thirty percent (30%) of voters now say the $787-billion economic stimulus plan passed by Congress is hurting the U.S. economy, up three points from late last month. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that for the second month in a row 31% say the plan has helped the economy. That's down from 34% who thought the plan would help in late February just after Congress approved it. Thirty-one percent (31%) now say the plan has had no impact on the economy, also unchanged from May. Forty-five percent (45%) of Americans say the rest of the new government spending in the stimulus plan should be stopped right away, but 36% disagree. Seventy-six percent (76%) say it is at least somewhat likely that a large amount of money in the stimulus plan will be wasted due to inadequate government oversight. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter Forty-nine percent (49%) of voters worry that the federal government will do too much in response to current economic problems, the first time this number has fallen below 50% since March. Thirty-five percent (35%) fear the government won’t do enough, down two points from earlier this month. Voters are a little closer this month in their ranking of President Obama’s priorities. Thirty-one (31%) say cutting the federal deficit in half is most important, down five points from earlier this month, while 27% now rate health care reform as number one. Twenty-two percent (22%) put the emphasis on the development of new sources of energy, and 12% believe ensuring that every child has access to a complete and competitive education should be the priority. Republicans and voters not affiliated with either major party continue to believe cutting the deficit is the president’s top priority, while Democrats favor health care reform. Voters are now evenly divided over which priority the president is most likely to achieve: 25% put both health care reform and development of new energy sources first. But these numbers are little changed form the previous survey. For 21%, education reform is now the likeliest goal to be reached. Just seven percent (7%) say the president is most likely to be able to cut the deficit in half. Similarly, 64% say cutting the deficit is the priority Obama is least likely to achieve. Eleven percent (11%) put health care reform in that category, followed by just eight percent (8%) who believe that of energy development and seven percent (7%) who say education reform is his least achievable goal. These numbers also are mostly unchanged from the first of the month. Most voters still blame the Bush administration for the nation’s economic problems, but a growing number are inclined to blame Obama’s policies.
