Generic Congressional Ballot: Republicans 43%, Democrats 38%

Republicans now hold a five-point advantage over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot after the two were tied for the previous two weeks.  This survey was conducted Nov. 21, 22 and 27.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 43% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for the Republican in their district’s congressional race if the election was held today, while 38% would choose the Democrat instead.

The prior week, the GOP candidate earned 41% support to the Democrat's 40%. The week before that, the candidates each picked up 41% of the vote, the first time in nearly two-and-a-half years that the Republican had not held the lead.

Since the beginning of the year, GOP support has remained in the narrow range of 41% to 45%, while Democrats have earned 35% to 41%.

Democrats enjoyed a seven-point advantage on the Generic Congressional Ballot - 42% to 35% - when Barack Obama took office as president in late January 2009.  From June 2009 until the first week in November this year, the Republican candidate has led the Democrat by as much as 12 points and as little as two. The week before Election Day November 2010, support for Republicans peaked at 51%, the highest level of support either party has enjoyed in the last two years.
