As the second half of his second term approaches, President Bush’s job performance continues to receive poor reviews from the American public. In 21 of 27 states surveyed by Rasmussen Reports recently, the percentage of those who disapprove of the President’s job performance outweighs the percentage of those who approve (see State-by-State summary). In most cases, among those 21 states, a plurality of voters fall in the “strongly disapprove” category. In Oregon (54%) and Connecticut (51%), a majority strongly disapproves. The Connecticut numbers are especially interesting since the state’s GOP Governor is among the nation’s most popular and holds a huge lead in her bid for re-election. Connecticut also hosts one of the nation’s most interesting Senate races between Democratic incumbent Joe Lieberman and the man who beat him in the primary, Ned Lamont. Other states where Bush fares exceptionally poorly include Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Washington, where 49% of voters in each state report strong disapproval of the president. In Florida, Gov. Jeb Bush bests his brother with a 64% approval rating of voters and 36% disapproval. The president earns approvals from 41% and disapprovals from 59%. Not surprisingly, the president’s best performance is found in his home state of Texas, where approvals outrank disapprovals 55% to 44%.
