Sixty-eight percent (68%) of American voters see Barack Obama as politically liberal, including 41% who say he is very liberal. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 24% say the President-elect is politically moderate while 4% see him as conservative. These results are little changed from the fall political campaign, despite the fact that some on the political left see Obama’s early appointments tilting to the right. Ninety-five percent (95%) of political conservatives see Obama as politically liberal. Seventy-one percent (71%) of liberals see the President-elect as one of their own. However, political moderates are more likely to see Obama as closer to the political center. Forty-four percent (44%) of moderates see Obama as moderate while 46% see him as liberal (see full demographic crosstabs). Joe Biden is seen as politically liberal by 63% of voters, including 30% who say the Vice-President elect is very liberal. Twenty-six percent (26%) see Biden as politically moderate and 4% see him as conservative. An earlier survey found that Biden in more popular than the current Vice President, but many voters doubt he will play as big a role as his predecessor. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Sign up now. Forty percent (40%) think he views society as generally unfair and discriminatory. Overall, 64% of voters view the nation as fair and decent while 26% hold the opposite view. This is a significant indicator in that voters who see society as unfair and discriminatory are far more likely to favor aggressive government action to change society. Just 51% of voters under 30 view American society as generally fair and decent while 36% disagree. Voters over 30 have a far more positive view of the nation. Republicans and unaffiliated voters overwhelmingly believe that American society is generally fair and decent. Democrats are more evenly divided. Interestingly, while just 49% of Democrats have a positive view of American society, 65% of those in Obama’s party believe the President-elect holds that view. On the other hand, 79% of Republicans view American society in a positive light but just 21% in the GOP think Obama agrees. Seventy-one percent (71%) of voters think that American society is generally fair and decent. Forty-eight percent (48%) think that Obama shares that view (see crosstabs). Overall, Obama has received positive approval ratings since his election on November 4. Crosstabs are available to Premium Members only.
