This past weekend, President-elect Barack Obama revealed his plan to create 2.5 million jobs in America through massive infrastructure projects including rebuilding roads and bridges, modernizing schools and developing alternative energy sources. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that Americans overall think the plan will be a good thing for the struggling economy. Sixty percent (60%) of adults favor the mega-infrastructure plan, while 24% are opposed. Another 16% are undecided. Even a third of Republicans (34%) are in favor of the plan, along with 83% of Democrats and 61% of unaffiliated voters. Women are more undecided than men. While 57% of women favor the plan, 19% oppose it, and another 25% are not sure. Meanwhile, 64% of men are in favor of the plan, with 29% opposed and just seven percent (7%) unsure. More than half (56%) of adults believe the investment will create a substantial number of new jobs. Only 19% disagree. One in four voters (25%) are not sure yet. While over half of Democrats (69%) and unaffiliated voters (53%) say the plan will create a large number of jobs, just 43% of Republicans agree. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Sign up now. Just 10% think the investment will have no impact. One-in-three Republicans (33%) say the investment will be good for the economy, along with 75% of Democrats and 58% of unaffiliated voters. U.S. stocks rose to their highest levels in over a month on Monday, in reaction to Obama’s weekend announcement and the proposed $15 billion loan plan for the nation’s Big Three automakers. Nationally, in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Approval Index, 43% of voters now Strongly Approve of the way Obama is handling the role of president-elect while just 16% Strongly Disapprove. Voters are fairly evenly divided as to whether taxes will increase or stay the same during Obama’s first year in office. While 34% say taxes will most likely go up, 32% say they will not change. Just 15% think taxes will decrease during his first year. A separate recent survey found that voters are growing less worried about increasing taxes under Obama than before he was elected.
