When it comes to the handling of the economy, Democrats and Republicans are in a virtual tie in terms of voter trust. For the second straight month, Republicans have inched closer to Democrats when it comes to who voters trust more to handle economic issues. Now 44% trust the Democrats more on the economy, while 43% trust the GOP more, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. This is the closest the two parties have been on the issue since last August. Last month, voters trusted Democrats more on the issue by a 45% to 42% margin. Men now trust Republicans more on the economy by a 48% to 41% margin, while women prefer Democrats by a 48% to 38% margin. Out of 10 key issues tracked monthly by Rasmussen Reports, voters trust Democrats more on five and the GOP more on four. The parties are tied on abortion, each having 41% voter support. From January through March, Democrats held the advantage on eight issues. (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls.) Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter. Republicans continue to hold solid leads on national security and taxes. On national security and the War on Terror, voters trust the GOP more by a 48% to 41% margin. Republicans have been ahead of Democrats on this issue for seven straight months. However, voter confidence that the United States is winning the War on Terror is at its lowest level since June 2008 The GOP holds a six-point lead on the issue of taxes, representing the fourth consecutive month voters have trusted the party more on the handling of that issue. Recent polling shows that most voters (52%) think they pay more than their fair of taxes. Republicans hold a two-point lead on the War in Iraq, after being behind Democrats on the issue in every survey since September. Voters are also a little less confident that President Obama will bring U.S. combat troops home from Iraq by the end of his first term as he has long promised. The Republicans' five-point lead in voter trust on immigration is now down to one point. Democrats continue to hold dominant leads in terms of voter trust on the issues of education, health care and government ethics and corruption. Democrats also have regained their long-standing lead on Social Security after last month’s surprising partisan tie - at 41% each - on the issue. Democrats now lead on Social Security by a 48% to 39% margin. Last week’s release of the Generic Congressional Ballot found Republicans just ahead of Democrats by a 40% to 39% margin. LINK It was the second straight week the GOP was on top after months of Democratic dominance, but the results appear to reflect a lack of enthusiasm for either party rather than gains for the Republicans.
