Only 33% in Massachusetts Favor Incumbent Governor in 2010

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, embroiled in a budget crisis like many state chief executives these days, may need to be thinking about another line of work. Just 33% of Massachusetts voters say they are at least somewhat likely to vote for the Democratic incumbent if he seeks reelection in 2010. Nineteen percent (19%) say they’re not very likely to do so, and 38% say they aren’t likely at all to vote for Patrick, according to a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Bay State voters. One-third of the state’s voters (34%) now approve of the job Patrick is doing as governor, including only eight percent (8%) who Strongly Approve. This marks a 14-drop in approval for the governor since February, but it’s roughly the same place he was in the polls a year ago. Sixty-five percent (65%) now disapprove of Patrick’s job performance, including 39% who Strongly Disapprove. Forty-nine percent (49%) say Patrick’s Republican predecessor, Mitt Romney, did a better job as governor, while 32% say Patrick is the better of the two. Sixty percent (16%) say neither man did a good job. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Sign up now. If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates also available on Twitter. Not that Massachusetts is a GOP stronghold by any means--only 31% say they miss former President George W. Bush at least a little, but 65% don’t miss him at all. Fifty-eight percent (58%) approve of President Obama’s performance, with 38% who Strongly Approve. Forty-two percent (42%) disapprove, including 26% who Strongly Disapprove. This is well above the president’s recent showing in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll. Obama carried Massachusetts in November with 62% of the vote. One possible explanation of Patrick’s unpopularity is the new finding that 70% of the state’s voters are afraid Massachusetts is once again becoming “Tax-achusetts.” Just 24% disagree. Eighty-seven percent (87%) of Republicans, 59% of Democrats and 74% of voters not affiliated with either party share this concern. Nationwide, 51% have a favorable opinion of last week’s Tea Party protests.
