Following the failed terrorist attempt to blow up an airliner landing in Detroit on Christmas Day, Americans are a lot less critical of airport security procedures. In fact, a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 46% of U.S. voters believe current airport security procedures are not strict enough, a 13-point increase from April 2008. Just 11% say they are too strict. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of voters believe the current level of airport security is about right.Women feel more strongly than men that U.S. airport security procedures are not strict enough. Republicans are more inclined to agree than Democrats and voters not affiliated with either major party. These new findings are explained in part by the belief of 79% of voters nationwide that another terrorist attack in the United States is likely within the next year. That’s a 30-point jump from the end of August when just 49% of Americans felt that way. (Want a free daily e-mail update ? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook. Thirty-four percent (34%) of voters say airport security in other countries is not as strict as it is in the United States. Twenty-two percent (22%) say international security is stricter than America’s, and 26% think it’s about the same. Eighteen percent (18%) are not sure. The suspected Detroit bomber was on a flight from Amsterdam. Men and wealthier Americans tend to be more critical of foreign airport security. Only 18% of all voters now say the security precautions stemming from the 9/11 terrorist attacks, such as increased airline security, are more hassle than they’re worth. That’s down from 31% this past September. Sixty-three percent (63%) say the post-9/11 security precautions are not too much hassle, and 19% are undecided. In September, 51% said the precautions were not too much hassle for air travelers. Again, male voters and higher-income Americans are less likely to view these security precautions as a hassle. Most American adults (62%) say they are less likely to travel this holiday season compared to past years. Among those who do choose to travel, 21% plan to fly to their destinations.
