Election 2010: Florida Governor
Florida Governor: McCollum Holds Stable Lead Over Sink

The race to replace Charlie Crist as governor of Florida still leans Republican with little movement in either direction. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state shows state Attorney General Bill McCollum leading Democrat Alex Sink 46% to 35%. Polls last month and in October showed similar results. In all three polls, the Republican’s support is between 44% and 46% while Sink’s numbers range from 35% to 39%. Five percent (5%) currently like some other candidate, and 13% are undecided. Crist chose not to seek reelection and is running for the U.S. Senate. Once considered a shoo-in for his party’s nomination, Crist is now in a neck-and-neck GOP Senate Primary race with former state House Speaker Marco Rubio. Polling on that primary race will be updated next week. (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook. In the governor’s race, McCollum picks up 75% of the GOP vote and leads by 21 among voters not affiliated with either party. Sink has support from 65% of Democrats. McCollum earns favorable reviews from 53% of the state’s voters and unfavorable marks from 30%. Those figures include 16% who have a Very Favorable opinion and 13% with a Very Unfavorable view. McCollum was a member of the U.S. Congress for 20 years before quitting to run unsuccessfully for the GOP Senate nomination in 2004. Sink is the state’s chief financial officer and hopes to become Florida’s first woman governor. She is viewed favorably by 39% and unfavorably by 34%. Her ratings include 13% with a Very Favorable opinion and 12% with a Very Unfavorable view. At this very early stage of the campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the very favorable and very unfavorable figures more significant than the overall favorability totals. Crist once enjoyed sky-high ratings in the state but now receives approval from 51% of voters. That’s down a point from a month ago. It’s interesting to note that his approval ratings are virtually identical among Republicans, Democrats and unaffiliated voters. Overall, just 10% Strongly Approve, while 17% Strongly Disapprove. Barack Obama narrowly won Florida’s Electoral College votes in 2008, but just 42% of Florida voters now approve of the way he’s handling the job. That’s down two points over the past month and a bit below his national numbers in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll. The president’s ratings have been hurt nationally by opposition to the proposed health care legislation that appears to have stalled in Congress. Senior citizens are consistently among the biggest opponents of the proposed health care plan. Rasmussen Reports has released recent polls on the 2010 governor’s races in Arizona, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas.
