Republican hopeful Bill McCollum now has a double-digit lead over his likeliest Democratic competitor, Alex Sink, in Florida’s 2010 race for governor, but the race between the two is little changed from June.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Florida voters shows McCollum leading Sink 46% to 35%. Five percent (5%) favor another candidate, and 15% are undecided.

Four months ago, McCollum had an eight-point lead 42% to 34%.

Sink, the state’s chief financial officer and the best-known of the Democrats who have announced for the race, is hoping to be Florida’s first woman governor. McCollum, a member of the U.S. Congress for 20 years, is currently serving as the state’s attorney general and faces little opposition so far for his party’s nomination.

McCollum leads by 14 points among men and by eight among women. In June, women voters were almost evenly divided between the two candidates.

Voters not affiliated with either major party favor McCollum by eight points, but 28% of these voters are undecided.

Fourteen percent (14%) have a very favorable opinion of McCollum, while 10% regard him very unfavorably.

Sink has very favorables of 15% and very unfavorables of 12%.

At this very early stage of the campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the very favorable and very unfavorable figures more significant than the overall favorability totals.

Sink’s husband, attorney Bill McBride, was the unsuccessful Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 2002.

Florida voters are evenly divided over the job performance of the state’s current GOP governor, Charlie Crist. Forty-nine percent (49%) approve of the job he’s doing, while the same number (49%) disapprove. Thirteen percent (13%) strongly approve while 20% strongly disapprove.

Among likely Republican Primary voters, Crist holds a 49% to 35% lead over former state House Speaker Marco Rubio for the party’s nomination in next year’s U.S. Senate race.

Both men hold double digit leads over likely Democratic senatorial candidate Kendrick Meek, a fourth-term congressman.
