There's little movement in Wisconsin's tight gubernatorial race. The latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows Democratic Governor Jim Doyle, the incumbent, maintaining a narrow edge over his Republican challenger. Doyle now leads Congressman Mark Green 47% to 43% (see crosstabs).

This month's poll results show the race is little changed from a month ago when Doyle led by five percentage points.

Doyle is viewed favorably by 55%, unfavorably by 43%. When asked about the job he's doing as governor, 52% registered approval, 45% disapproval. Only 14% Strongly Approve of the governor's performance.

Green is viewed favorably by 49%, unfavorably by 34%.

Rumors continue to circulate that former Governor Tommy Thompson is considering a gubernatorial run, although it is considered a long shot. Thompson would be competitive, with a 46% to 44% lead over Doyle.

Thompson has also been rumored to be considering a Senate campaign, though this is considered even less likely. In that case, he trails incumbent Senator Herbert Kohl (D) by two points, 46% to 44%. The rumors about Thompson entering this race may be solely based upon wishful thinking as Kohl trounces other Republicans by roughly 30 percentage points.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Wisconsin voters say tax increases hurt the economy, while 54% say tax cuts help it. Most (52%) get professional help rather than prepare their taxes themselves (36%). Fifty-nine percent (59%) file electronically.

Fifty-six percent (56%) say our nation should welcome all immigrants except for security threats, criminals, and those who would exploit the welfare system. Thirty-four percent (34%) agree that all illegal aliens in the country should be forced to leave (49% disagree). Sixty-nine percent (69%) say we should secure our borders and enforcing existing immigration law before pursuing further reform.

The rolling average of the last three Rasmussen Reports election polls in Wisconsin shows Doyle leading 47% to 41%.The polling results have been remarkably stable through the early part of this campaign.
