President Bush leads Senator Kerry in Virginia by six percentage points, 50% to 44%. Those figures have changed little over the past month. Heading into the Republican National Convention, the President was ahead in Virginia 50% to 45%. In Election 2000, Bush won Virginia by nine percentage points, beating Al Gore 53% to 44%. It's been decades since a Democrat won the state. Still, earlier this year, polls found Kerry very close and some Democrats viewed the state as a potential pick-up. However, over the past month, the situation has changed and Virginia remains in the "Leans Bush" column in our Electoral College projections. Fifty-five percent (55%) of Virginia voters have a favorable opinion of President Bush. Forty-six percent (46%) have a favorable opinion of Senator Kerry. Forty-six percent (46%) of the state's voters believe the country is heading in the right direction. In Virginia, Bush leads 52% to 40% among men and 49% to 46% among women.
