Sixty-four percent (64%) of Americans say 17-year-olds should be required to consult a parent before taking the so-called “morning after” pill to prevent pregnancy.

Thirty percent (30%) do not think it is necessary for 17-year-olds to discuss the pill with a parent first, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Men and women have virtually identical views on this question.

Not surprisingly, 82% of pro-life adults say 17-year-olds should consult a parent first. However, pro-choice Americans are evenly divided on the need for parental consultation.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made it legal for 17-year-olds to take the morning-after poll in a decision two weeks ago, but 66% of all adults also think they should be required to talk to a doctor beforehand. Twenty-seven percent (27%) disagree.

Again, a sizable majority (83%) of pro-life Americans believe consultation with a doctor is in order, while those who are pro-choice are much more closely divided.

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Americans say abortion is morally wrong most of the time. Twenty-five percent (25%) disagree.

Sixty-four percent (64%) of women believe most abortions are morally wrong, a view shared by just 51% of men. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of pro-lifers agree, as do 29% of those who are pro-choice.

Most Americans (52%) now think it is too easy to get an abortion in America. That’s up slightly from two years ago when 45% thought it was too easy. Earlier this year, the number who thought it was too easy had declined.

Just 13% now say it’s too hard to get an abortion, while 21% believe the current availability is about right.

Most Republicans (68%) and adults not affiliated with either major party (52%) say abortion is too easy in this country. Among Democrats, 37% say it’s too easy, 17% too hard and 27% about right.

Eighty-four percent (84%) of pro-life Americans think it’s too easy to get an abortion here, and 20% of pro-choice adults agree. A plurality of those who are pro-choice (41%) say the level of difficulty involved is about right.

While abortion is an issue that many voters are passionate about, it ranks low on the list of issues that voters consider Very Important.

Two years ago, 60% of Americans had at least a somewhat favorable view of the federal Food and Drug Administration, while 36% viewed the agency unfavorably.
