A recent Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 71% of adults believe that the price of gas is at least somewhat likely to reach $5 a gallon before the end of the summer. Just 21% say it is unlikely to reach the $5 mark.

Sixty-seven percent (67%) of men and 73% of women expect gas prices to reach $5 a gallon this summer.

The same survey also found that 69% of adults say they will drive less now that gas prices have risen to $4 a gallon. Just 23% say prices will not affect them in this way.

Seventy-four percent (74%) of Democrats say they plan on driving less these days, 65% of Republicans say the same.

Seventy-eight percent (78%) of low income adults say they expect to drive less than before. Sixty-three percent (63%) of adults who earn more than $100,000 annually on driving less due to gas prices.

A separate survey conducted in early May found that voters were split on the idea of instituting a holiday on the federal gas tax for the summer.

The survey was conducted in partnership with Fox Television Stations, Inc.
