61% Concerned About Airline Safety

Sixty-one percent (61%) of Americans adults are at least somewhat concerned about their safety aboard airplanes. Among those who fly more than once a month, 63% are somewhat concerned or very concerned about airplane safety. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 29% are not very concerned and 8% are not at all concerned.

Twenty-nine percent (29%) of Americans believe flight cancellations will get worse in the next three months. Twenty-three percent (23%) think the situation will get better, while 34% expect little change. Among those who fly more than once a month, 46% say conditions will get better, 29% believe they’ll get worse and just 8% say conditions will stay about the same.

Overall, a plurality (44%) of adults blame the airlines for cancellations. Twenty-nine percent (29%) say the Federal Aviation Administration is the primary problem. More Republicans (54%) say the fault lies with the airlines than Democrats (41%).

Despite safety concerns, just 33% of all adults believe that the industry needs more government regulation. Twenty-one (21%) disagree and would favor less regulation of the airline industry. Thirty-four percent (34%) believe the regulatory burden is about right.

In terms of security, a separate Rasmussen Reports survey shows that a third (33%) of adults think procedures aren’t strict enough. Forty-two percent (42%) say airport security measures in the country are about right. Only 16% believe procedures are too strict.

Meanwhile, when it comes to flight delays, 31% of adults believe that flight delays are the fault of the airline. That’s compared to 33% who place the blame on bad weather, while 17% say the airport is responsible.

And in order to reduce flight delays, 45% say that major airports need to build more runway capacity. Twenty-nine percent (29%) disagree.
