October 11th is Columbus Day—the holiday honoring the anniversary of the October 12, 1492 arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas. A recent Rasmussen Reports survey found that only 11% declare Columbus Day as one of the nation’s most important holidays. That’s compared to 36% who consider it among the least important and 50% who think it’s somewhere in between. Slightly more men consider the holiday most important than women. Even though about a third say the holiday isn’t very important, most Americans favor the discoverer anyway. Seventy-one percent (71%) have a favorable opinion of Columbus, while only 21% hold an unfavorable view. Those figures include 24% who have a very favorable opinion and 7% who have a very unfavorable opinion. When asked, three-out-of-four adults (74%) could correctly identify the year in which Columbus arrived in the Americas—1492. Meanwhile, 85% of Americans didn’t do anything special to celebrate the holiday. Just 11% said they honored the day in a special way. Two-out-of-three adults (69%) didn’t have Columbus Day off from work. That’s compared to 21% who say they could relax the day away. Crosstabs available for Premium Members only.
