What America Thinks: What Would the Founding Fathers Say?

As we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 this July 4 weekend, what do Americans think of the men who founded the United States of America? How would they view their handiwork? 40% of Americans rate George Washington, the general who defeated the British in the American Revolution and the nation’s first president, as the greatest Founding Father. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, is second, followed by Benjamin Franklin, with later presidents John Adams and James Madison further down the list.

But just 21% think the government today has the consent of the governed, a key requirement of the Declaration of Independence. That helps explain why only 36% think the Founding Fathers would consider the United States a success if they were to come back today.
