Tax Time: 33% Concerned IRS Will Audit Them
Even though Americans overwhelmingly say they’ve never cheated on their taxes, one-third of them are worried they’ll get audited by the IRS.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 33% of American Adults are concerned that the Internal Revenue Service will audit their taxes, including 11% who are Very Concerned. Sixty-one percent (61%) aren’t concerned about an IRS audit, including 28% who are Not At All Concerned. Worries about the IRS have rising since 2017, when 23% were at least somewhat concerned they might get audits. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The survey of 1,337 American Adults was conducted on February 19-20 and 23, 2025 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.over the next six months.
