Most Say Impeachment No Problem for Trump in Upcoming Election

Most voters think President Trump’s impeachment won’t hurt him at the polls in November and don’t share House Democrats’ concern that the upcoming election may be unfair if Trump is one of the candidates.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that just 27% of Likely U.S. Voters believe Trump’s impeachment by House Democrats will hurt him in his bid for reelection. Slightly more (31%) say the impeachment will help him, while just as many (31%) feel it will have no impact. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Even among Democrats, only 40% think Trump’s reelection effort will be hurt by his impeachment. Just 16% of Republicans and 25% of voters not affiliated with either major party agree.

Thirty-eight percent (38%) of all voters agree with Congressman Adam Schiff, the leader of the House Democratic impeachment team, when he said last week, “The president’s misconduct cannot be decided at the ballot box, for we cannot be assured that the vote will be fairly won.”  A plurality (46%) disagrees with Schiff’s charge. Seventeen percent (17%) are not sure.

Only 24% of voters think the impeachment trial in the Senate will result in Trump’s removal from office.

Forty-nine percent (49%) of Democrats share Schiff’s view that Trump’s fate should not be decided by voters in November. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Republicans and unaffiliated voters by a 45% to 36% margin disagree.

Voters who think Trump’s impeachment will hurt him in November are far more likely to agree with Schiff than those who think the impeachment will help him or have no impact.

Women and those under 40 feel more strongly than men and older voters that the impeachment will hurt Trump with voters.

Sixty percent (60%) of voters who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing say the impeachment will help him in November. Among those who Strongly Disapprove of the president’s job performance, 55% believe the impeachment will hurt him instead.

Most voters think the Senate should allow new witnesses to supplement the House’s impeachment case before deciding whether to remove Trump from office.

Sixty percent (60%) of Democrats – and 40% of all voters – do not believe Trump won fairly when he defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. Interestingly, however, only 54% of Democrats – and 32% of all voters – think Clinton won the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination fairly.
