28% Say They Share Obama's Political Views

President Obama this week declared his intention to seek reelection, but just over one-quarter of voters say they share the same political views as the president.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that 57% believe the president is more politically liberal than they are, while just nine percent (9%) say he is more conservative. Twenty-eight percent (28%) of voters say their political views are about the same as the president’s. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Twenty-four percent (24%) of voters said last month that they share the president's views, in line with the 26% who said the same last August.  The number who say Obama is more liberal than they are is down slightly from 61% in February but is identical to the August finding.

The number of voters who have characterized Obama as a political liberal has ranged from 59% to 77% since June 2008.

By comparison, 25% of voters say their political views are about the same as the average Republican in Congress. Twenty-six percent (26%) say the same about the average congressional Democrat.  Still, voters continue to view the Republican agenda in Congress as more mainstream than the agenda of the Democrats.

Then again, a plurality (48%) of voters say when it comes to the major issues facing the country, their views are closer to the average Tea Party member than to those of the average member of Congress.
