New Hampshire: Romney 41% Cain 17% Paul 11%

The latest look at the Republican Primary race in New Hampshire shows former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney remains the clear frontrunner.

The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of Likely GOP Primary voters shows Romney with 41% support. Georgia Businessman Herman Cain comes in a distant second with 17% of the vote while Texas Congressman Ron Paul picks up 11% support.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich receives support from eight percent (8%) while former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman attracts seven percent (7%). No other candidate reaches five percent (5%) support. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate, and five percent (5%) more are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

While support for Romney in the state is relatively unchanged from September, Cain’s support has jumped from four percent (4%) since that time. Texas Governor Rick Perry, who came in second to Romney in New Hampshire with 18% in September, now receives just four percent (4%) of the vote.

Nationally, a survey earlier this month finds Romney and Cain tied for first for the GOP nod, each attracting 29% of the vote. Gingrich is the only other candidate who receives double-digit support.

In Iowa, Cain picks up 28% of the vote over Romney’s 21%. Paul receives 10% support in the Hawkeye State.

Regardless of choice, 62% of New Hampshire GOP Primary voters believe Romney is the most likely candidate to win the nomination. Just 12% think Cain will win the nomination.

Romney is also seen as the candidate most likely to defeat the incumbent in the general election. Seventy-seven percent (77%) feel it’s at least somewhat likely that Romney could beat President Obama in the general election, compared to 61% who feel that way about Cain and 54% who say the same of Perry. Just 37% believe Paul could win the general election.
