Massachusetts Survey of 500 Likely Voters

Conducted February 29, 2012

By Rasmussen Reports

*Please note that we split the survey to rotate the order of the candidates, so while half will hear the Republican first, the other half hears the Democrat mentioned first.

1* In thinking about the 2012 presidential election, suppose you had a choice between Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Barack Obama.  If the election were held today, would you vote for Republican Mitt Romney or Democrat Barack Obama?

2* Suppose the Republicans nominate Rick Santorum. If the 2012 election for president were held today, would you vote for Republican Rick Santorum or Democrat Barack Obama?

3* I’m going to read you a short list of people in the news. For each, please let me know if you have a very favorable, somewhat favorable, somewhat unfavorable, or very unfavorable impression.

Mitt Romney

Rick Santorum

4* Generally speaking, how would you rate the U.S. economy these days? Excellent, good, fair, or poor?

5* Are economic conditions in the country getting better or worse?

6* Looking back, were the bailouts of banks, auto companies, and insurance companies good for the United States or bad for the United States?

7* A proposal has been made that would let people select their own Social Security and Medicare retirement age. Those who wanted to retire earlier would pay more in taxes and those who wanted to pay less in taxes would retire later. So long as they are paying enough to cover the cost of their own decision, should people have the right to pick their own Social Security and Medicare retirement age?

8* Is it possible to reduce the cost of Medicare by changing Medicare or is it necessary to reduce the overall cost of health care services in the United States?

9* Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: “The United States should not commit its forces to military action overseas unless the cause is vital to our national interest.”

10* Should the United States remove its troops from Western Europe and let the Europeans defend themselves?

11* How would you rate the job Barack Obama has been doing as President… do you strongly approve, somewhat approve, somewhat disapprove, or strongly disapprove of the job he’s been doing?

NOTE: Margin of Sampling Error, +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence
