New York Governor: Cuomo (D) 54%, Paladino (R) 38%

Democrat Andrew Cuomo still holds a double-digit lead over Republican challenger Carl Paladino in Rasmussen Reports’ first post-primary survey of the New York governor’s race.

A statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters finds Cuomo with 54% support versus 38% for Paladino, the winner of last Tuesday’s state GOP Primary. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are undecided.

This is Paladino’s best showing yet. It remains to be seen whether this is a short-lived post-primary bounce or a tightening of the race that Cuomo has dominated for months. The race remains Solid Democrat in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Gubernatorial Scorecard.

In July, Cuomo, the state’s attorney general who was unchallenged for the Democratic nomination, led Paladino by a two-to-one margin – 58% to 29%. The son of a former governor, Cuomo has been over 50% in every single poll conducted on this race. Paladino never topped 30% before the primary.
