49% Say Illegal Immigrants Perform Jobs U.S. Citizens Won’t Do

While voters have consistently supported tough penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants, nearly half believe that illegal immigrants do the jobs Americans don’t want to do.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that 40% believe illegal immigrants take jobs away from U.S. citizens. But 49% say they perform jobs that U.S. citizens won’t do. Another 11% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Most Republicans (60%) think illegal immigrants take jobs away from U.S. citizens, while a majority of Democrats (65%) and voters not affiliated with either party (51%) say they perform jobs Americans don’t want to do.

While 74% of Political Class voters say illegal immigrants do jobs American don’t want to do, 51% of Mainstream voters say they take away jobs.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on August 21-22, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
