Does Discrimination Explain ‘Pay Gap’ Between Men and Women?

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that just 34% of American Adults believe differences in pay between men and women are primarily due to discrimination. That finding is down from 39% who blamed discrimination for the “pay gap” in 2018. Twenty-two percent (22%) attribute pay differences to different levels of experience, while 17% say it's due to different levels of ability. Fifteen percent (15%) think differences in compensation are due to some other factor, while another 12% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The survey of 1,000 American Adults was conducted on October 7 and 10, 2022 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research.
