Capitol Riot: Harsh Sentences Divide Voters
Democrats are satisfied with long prison sentences for supporters of former President Donald Trump who rioted at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, but other voters, not so much.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 49% of Likely U.S. voters believe the so-called “J6” riot was a mostly peaceful protest that got out of control, while 45% think the storming of the Capitol was an illegal insurrection against the government. The survey of 993 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on September 6-7 and 10, 2023 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research.
