Editor’s Note: Analysis of responses to Question 1, including comparison of phone and online responses, indicates that the wording may have caused confusion among many respondents. Recent research by the Williams Institute estimates that 0.6% of Americans are transgender.

National Survey of 1,000 American Adults

Conducted September 19-20, 2021
By Rasmussen Reports

1* In your day-to-day life, do you identify with a gender other than the one you were born with biologically?

2* Federal education officials say a male student who identifies as a female and participates on a girls’ sports team has the right to change and shower in the girls’ locker room without restrictions. Do you favor or oppose allowing transgender people to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of the gender they identify with?

3* The U.S. State Department recently instituted a policy allowing Americans to select the gender they would like printed on their U.S. passport, even if it does not match the gender on supporting documentation such as a birth certificate, previous passport, or state ID. Do you approve or disapprove of this policy change?
