40% Say Scotty McCreery Will Win 'American Idol'

The 10th season of "American Idol" is about to come to an end this week, and a plurality of viewers think 17-year-old Scotty McCreery should win - and will win - the competition.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 40% of "American Idol" viewers believe McCreery should win the singing competition over 16-year-old Lauren Alaina. Twenty-six percent (26%) think Alaina should win the title.  Thirty-four percent (34%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Additionally, 48% of "Idol" watchers think McCreery will win this year's competition, which features the youngest finalists in the history of the show. Twenty-four percent (24%) feel Alaina will win. Twenty-eight percent (28%) are not sure who will walk away with top honors.

The feeling that McCreery should win is strongest among adults who watch the show every week.  Fifty-four percent (54%) of those who watch "American Idol" weekly think McCreery should win, and even more (62%) say he will prevail.  Just 32% say Alaina should win, and 29% think she will win.

This year’s competition included a wide variety of music styles, including James Durbin who had more of a heavy metal influence and Casey Abrams who sang some songs while playing a stand-up bass.  Both finalists are more influenced by the country music genre.
