What They Told Us: Reviewing Last Week’s Key Polls - Week Ending May 16, 2020

In surveys last week, this is what America told Rasmussen Reports:

- President Trump ended the polling week with a daily job approval of 49%. 

- As parts of the country slowly emerge from coronavirus lockdown, economic confidence has slowed from April’s rapid descent, dropping just one point to 93.7 in May. But this is the lowest finding in six years of surveying and six points below the April 2014 baseline.

- Republicans overwhelmingly expect President Trump to be their nominee this fall, but nearly one-in-four GOP voters would prefer someone else.

- Despite increasing reports of high-level FBI complicity in attacks on the Trump campaign and the early Trump presidency, voters still view the federal police agency favorably and aren’t ready to dump its current director.

- Voters agree government money isn’t enough to counter the coronavirus economic crash, but most Democrats think $2,000 monthly payments to Americans who earn less than $120,000 a year are necessary even as the lockdown begins to break down.

- Joe Biden has the support of just over half of Democrats, although the vast majority still expect the former vice president to be their party’s presidential nominee.

- The Rasmussen Reports Immigration Index for the week of May 3-7, 2020 has risen to 104.2 from 101.6 the week before.

- Voters generally approve of the way their state and local governments have handled the coronavirus pandemic, but they’re also more worried that government may be making things worse rather than better.

- Thirty-five percent (35%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction.
