39% Give Obama Positive Marks for Economic Fairness, 39% Say Poor

President Obama made income inequality the central issue of last month's State of the Union address, but voters give the president only slightly better marks now when it comes to his handling of issues related to economic fairness.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 39% of Likely U.S. Voters think the president is doing a good or excellent job in this area. That's up from 37% in December but still down from 42% a year ago. However, just 39% also say the president is doing a poor job when it comes to economic fairness, down five points from two months ago and his lowest negative in a year. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Voters Rate Obama More Negatively on the Economy, National Security

Voters haven’t exactly been singing President Obama’s praises lately when it comes to economy and national security issues,  but they’re even more critical of him now.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 32% rate Obama’s handling of economic issues as good or excellent, down two points from the previous week and the lowest positive ratings since early December. Nearly half (47%) rate him poorly on the economy, up four points from last week and the highest poor rating since the same early December survey. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

37% Rate Obama Good or Excellent on Economic Issues

Positive views on President Obama’s economic leadership have dropped slightly, but are still above the recent low reached in December 2013.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 37% of Likely U.S. Voters now give the president good or excellent marks for his handling of economic issues. That’s down from 39% in early January, but it’s still up from a year-and-a-half low of 32% in early December. Forty-five percent (45%) still rate the president’s economic performance as poor, up four points from earlier in the month, but still down from a recent high of 48% in early December. Positive views on President Obama’s economic leadership continue to improve after reaching a year-and-a-half low last month.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 39% of Likely U.S. Voters now give the president good or excellent marks for his handling of economic issues. That's up from a low of 32% in early December and Obama's highest positives in this area since October. Most Voters Still See Obama, Biden As Liberal

Most voters still have little doubt that President Obama and Vice President Biden are liberals.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 68% of Likely U.S. Voters consider the president at least somewhat liberal in political terms, including 44% who believe he is Very Liberal. Twenty-one percent (21%) feel the president is politically moderate. Just seven percent (7%) consider Obama somewhat or Very Conservative. (To see survey question wording, click here).

47% Say Obama's Too Hostile to Small Business

Voters are slightly less critical of how President Obama deals with small business issues but still think he's more likely to favor big businesses over small ones.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 35% of Likely U.S. Voters now give the president good or excellent ratings for his handling of issues related to small business, while 42% rate him poorly. That’s a slightly more positive rating than last month when 46% gave Obama poor marks in this area. But 40% gave the president positive marks for his handling of small business issues a year ago. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Coming off his reelection, President Obama signaled that immigration reform and stricter gun control were two of his top agenda items, but none of his initiatives in these areas made it into law. Voters remain critical of the president's handling of both issues.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 33% of Likely U.S. Voters give the president good or excellent marks when it comes to immigration issues, while 45% rate his performance in this area as poor. A year ago, Obama's positives in this area were 39%, and 37% rated him poor. His good or excellent ratings ran as high as 43% in late February, while his poor numbers peaked at 46% in July. 49% Rate Obama Poorly on Deficit Reduction

Despite his support of the new bipartisan budget deal, nearly half of voters now rate President Obama poorly on his efforts to reduce the deficit, and he only fares marginally better when it comes to policies related to economic fairness.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 49% of Likely U.S. Voters give Obama poor marks for his handling of issues related to deficit reduction, up three points from 46% in October and down just point from this year's high of 50% in July. Just 34% give the president good or excellent marks in this area, largely in line with findings throughout 2013. 46% Rate Obama Poorly on Economy

Positive views of President Obama’s economic leadership have rebounded slightly since hitting its lowest level in a year-and-a-half earlier this month.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 36% of Likely U.S. Voters now give the president good or excellent marks for his handling of economic issues. That's up from 32% in early December, his lowest positives since June of last year. 14% View Education Secretary Arne Duncan Favorably

Arne Duncan is President Obama’s point man for the controversial Common Core national education standards being imposed on schools all over the country, but he remains largely unknown to voters after nearly five years of serving as the U.S. secretary of Education.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 14% of Likely U.S. Voters have a favorable opinion of Duncan, while 16% view him unfavorably. This includes four percent (4%) with a Very Favorable regard for the former chief executive officer of the Chicago school system and six percent (6%) with a Very Unfavorable one. 48% Rate Obama Poorly on Economy

Positive views of President Obama's economic leadership have fallen to their lowest level in 18 months.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 32% of Likely U.S. Voters now give the president good or excellent marks for his handling of economic issues. These are his lowest positives since June of last year. Nearly half (48%) rate him poorly in this area, the highest level of criticism since August 2012. 25% Still Haven’t Heard of HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

Favorable opinions of U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius have improved slightly from a month ago, but one-in-four voters still hasn't even heard of the government official in charge of the unpopular new national health care law. 

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 43% of Likely U.S. Voters hold an unfavorable impression of Sebelius, showing little change from late October. But 30% now view Sebelius favorably, up from 25% last month. These findings include nine percent (9%) with a Very Favorable opinion of the HHS secretary and 28% with a Very Unfavorable one. 

Twenty-five percent (25%) of voters still haven't heard of Sebelius, while another two percent (2%) don't know enough about her to venture even a soft opinion. That compares to 31% who had no opinion of her a month ago. This is the first survey to give respondents the option of saying they have never heard of her. 40% Say Obama Good or Excellent Leader

Negative reviews of President Obama's leadership continue to rise and now stand at their highest level in over three years.  

Forty-four percent (44%) of Likely U.S. Voters consider the president's leadership poor, up two points from August and his highest negative rating since September 2010. Forty percent (40%) rate the president as a good or excellent leader. That's down three points from 43% in August and from a high of 55% last December. With the president's positive ratings generally running in the mid- to upper 40s in regular surveys for the past two years, this marks his lowest positives since December 2011. Most voters now think President Obama is doing a poor job when it comes to health care. 

Just 30% of Likely U.S. Voters rate the president's handling of issues related to health care as good or excellent. That’s down 14 points from October and the lowest finding to date. Fifty-five percent (55%) give the president poor marks in this area, up from October’s previous high of 47%.
