Generic Congressional Ballot: Democrats 41%, Republicans 37%

Democrats lead Republicans by four points on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday May 18.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 41% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for the Democrat in their district’s congressional race if the election were held today, while 37% would choose the Republican instead.

The national telephone survey of 3,500 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports from May 12-May 18, 2014. 29% Say U.S. is Heading in Right Direction

Twenty-nine (29%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending May 10.

This is up two points from 27% the week before, the lowest level of optimism since early December. The number who say the country is heading in the right direction had been in the narrow range of 28% to 30% for 17 out of the 21 weeks since then.

Twenty-seven percent (27%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending May 4.
 
This is unchanged from the week before and remains the lowest level of optimism since early December. The number who say the country is heading in the right direction had been in the narrow range of 28% to 30% for 16 out of the 20 weeks since then.

Voters Trust GOP More on Economy, National Security

Republicans still hold the advantage in terms of voter trust on most major issues regularly tracked by Rasmussen Reports, including the number one concern, the economy.

The economy remains the most important issue to voters in terms of how they will vote in the next congressional election,and Republicans have a 46% to 39% lead in voter trust in that area, according to new national telephone surveying. That ties the largest gap between the parties on the issue since May 2012. Since June 2009, the GOP has led in voter trust on the economy in all but one survey. 35% Think U.S., Allies Winning War on Terror

Belief that America is winning the War on Terror and is safer than before the 9/11 terrorist attacks have fallen to their lowest levels in three years.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 35% of Likely U.S. Voters now believe the United States and its allies are winning the War on Terror. But that’s down from 39% in January and is the most pessimistic assessment since April 2011. Fifty percent (50%) felt America and its allies were winning a year ago. 

Twenty-seven percent (27%) say the terrorists are winning the War on Terror, down from a recent high of 30% in January. Just as many (28%) say neither side is winning. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

6% Rate Congress’s Performance as Good or Excellent

Congress earns its lowest performance ratings in months, while fewer voters than ever think members of Congress actually listen to them.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just six percent (6%) of Likely U.S. Voters think Congress is doing a good or excellent job, its lowest positives since last June. Sixty-three percent (63%) rate Congress' job performance poorly. Still, that's down 12 points from an eight-year high of 75% last November amidst the troubled rollout of the new national health care law. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Thirty-one percent (31%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is headed in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending April 13.

The finding is up one point from 30% the previous week. This is the only the second week when the number who say the country is heading in the right direction has inched above the narrow range of 28% to 30% since mid-December.

48% Think America’s Best Days Are in the Past

Nearly half of U.S. voters still think this nation’s glory days are in its past.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 33% of Likely U.S. Voters think America’s best days are still to come, up only slightly from 31% in October 2013, the lowest level of optimism in two-and-a-half years. Forty-eight percent (48%) think the nation’s best days are in the past, although that's down from last October's recent high of 52%. Nineteen percent (19%) are not sure.
