26% Say U.S. Heading in Right Direction

Twenty-six percent (26%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending October 19.
 
The number who say the country is heading in the right direction is down one point from the previous week. This finding has now been in the 23% to 27% range nearly every week since early June and has been below 30% most weeks for the past year.

Generic Congressional Ballot: Democrats 41%, Republicans 41%

Democrats and Republicans remain tied on the latest Generic Congressional Ballot.
 
 A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending October 20 finds that 41% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for the Democrat in their district's congressional race if the election were held today, while the same number (41%) would choose the Republican.

34% Think America’s Best Days are in the Future

More voters now think America’s best days lie ahead after hitting an all-time low over the summer, but most still say the nation's best days are in the past.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 34% of Likely U.S. Voters now think America’s best days are still to come, the highest since the beginning of the year. This comes after optimism about America’s future hit an all-time low of 29% in July. Still, 51% think America’s best days are already in the past, down just slightly from July’s high of 52% and one of the few times this figure has passed the 50% mark. The number who say the country is heading in the right direction is up four points from the previous week and is the highest finding since early June. This number has been below 30% most weeks during the past year.

Americans Don’t Think Incumbents Deserve Reelection

Incumbents might have something to worry about this November as voters do not think their local representative is good for the job nor that they deserve to be reelected.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 23% of Likely U.S. Voters think their representative in Congress is the best person for the job. This finding is up slightly from June which was the lowest finding since November 2009. A plurality (41%) believes their local representative is not the best person for the job. This is down six points from the previous survey and is the lowest finding since June 2013. Thirty-six percent (36%) are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Voters Trust Republicans More Than Democrats on Nine Out of 15 Major Issues

Voters continue to put more trust in Republicans than Democrats to handle important policy issues regularly tracked by Rasmussen Reports like the economy and job creation, though they trust Democrats more on other top issues like health care and Social Security. 

The economy remains the number one issue in terms of importance for the next election, and the GOP still holds a 44% to 41% lead in voter trust on that issue. Since June 2009, the GOP has led in voter trust on the economy in all but one survey. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Voters Think Congress Cheats to Get Reelected

Most voters still think Congress is doing a poor job and believe most of its members only get reelected because a fix is in.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just six percent (6%) of Likely U.S. Voters think Congress is doing a good or excellent job, unchanged from a month ago. Sixty-five percent (65%) rate its performance as poor. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
