What America Thinks: Free College? Who Pays?
Government-paid college is sure to become a big issue on the campaign trail now that Hillary Clinton has joined Bernie Sanders and other senior Democrats in calling for it. Clinton’s New College Compact proposes to make college more affordable through a combination of lower tuition and fees, more state and federal funding and lower student loan interest rates.
Americans are almost evenly divided over the idea of government-paid college for those who can’t afford it, and 47% of voters favor making community college tuition-free. The problem is who’s going to pay for it. Voters like the concept of free college as long as it doesn’t cost them anything.
