What America Thinks: Immigrants Welcome, But…
Voters are okay with legal immigration and those who come to the United State to pursue the American Dream, but they strongly believe those immigrants should assimilate.
Two-thirds of voters think immigration, when done within the law, is good for the United States, and 80% have a favorable opinion of immigrants who work hard to support their family and pursue the American Dream. However, 68% think immigrants to this country should adopt America's culture, language and heritage. Just 18% think they should maintain the culture, language and heritage of their native country instead.
But there's one big concern: Only 54% now believe most immigrants to this country actually intend to work hard, support their family and pursue the American Dream.
