What America Thinks About America
We frequently ask Americans what they think about different things around the world and in their own country, but we don’t always ask how they feel about the country itself. So we decided to find out what America thinks about America.
Not surprisingly, nearly all Americans love their country and are proud to be an American. Very few have ever considered giving up their U.S. citizenship, something three-quarters of Americans consider Very Important. Most Americans think we should be proud, rather than ashamed of the country’s history, and over half think the United States is more exceptional than other nations.
That’s not to say the love is unconditional, though. While most consider U.S. society generally fair and decent, 46% think America’s best days have already come and gone. Just a third think they still lie ahead and feel this country is heading in the right direction. Americans are also evenly divided over whether the United States is America’s last best hope for mankind: 37% say yes; 38% say no.
But, even with its faults, it’s clear most are still proud to be an American. For Rasmussen Reports, I’m Alex Boyer. Remember, if it’s in the news, it’s in our polls.
