Washington Governor Christine Gregoire now has a narrow lead over repeat Republican challenger Dino Rossi in her bid for reelection.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone poll shows Gregoire attracting 50% of the vote while Rossi earns 48%. When October began, the candidates were tied. Gregoire’s support had declined steadily from May through September before improving slightly in that early October poll.
Still, the Democratic incumbent is viewed favorably by just 50% of voters statewide while Rossi earns positive reviews from 52%.
Greogoire leads by six percentage points among women but trails by three among men (full demographic crosstabs available for Premium Members).
Forty-three percent (43%) say that Gregoire is doing a good or excellent as governor while 34% say she is doing a poor job. Those figures have changed little over the past month.
This year’s election is reminiscent of the exciting match-up between the two candidates in 2004 that ended with a controversial win for Gregoire that had to be decided by the state’s courts.
