Montana Governor: Governor Schweitzer Cruising to Re-Election

Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer continues to hold onto a solid lead over his Republican opponent in his bid for re-election. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds Schweitzer leading State Senator Roy Brown 56% to 32%. Libertarian candidate Stan Jones earns support from 3%.

When “leaners” are included, Schweitzer has a 59% to 35% advantage.

The Governor’s lead was slightly higher last month, when he was ahead 61% to 32%.

Schweitzer is currently serving his first term as Governor, during which he has received high marks from voters in the Treasure State. This month, 58% of voters say he is doing a good or excellent job as governor, while just 14% think he is doing a poor job. Prior to his term, Schweitzer served in the United States Department of Agriculture under Bill Clinton for seven years.

This month, Schweitzer earns support from 87% of Democrats and 28% of Republicans in Montana. Brown is backed by just 60% of Republicans and 7% of Democrats. Among unaffiliated voters, Schweitzer has a 56% to 25% advantage, his support down slightly from earlier this month.

Among men, Schweitzer leads 54% to 38%. Women voters support the Democrat 58% to 26%.

Rasmussen Markets data shows that Schweitzer is currently given a % chance of keeping his job with a victory in November. This figure is updated on a 24/7 basis by market participants. It costs nothing to join and add your voice to the collective wisdom of the market.

Favorability ratings for Schweitzer have fallen slightly since the last survey. The governor is viewed favorably by 67% of voters, down from 71% last month. Thirty-two percent (32%) of voters have an unfavorable view of Schweitzer, up from 27% a month ago. Brown is viewed favorably by 43%, up from 37% last month, and unfavorably by 37%, down from 41% in June. One in five Montana voters (20%) still have no opinion on the challenger.

The race for Montana’s Electoral Votes remains competitive between John McCain and Barack Obama.
