If baseball fans are correct this season, the Los Angeles Angels and the Chicago Cubs will be battling it out this October in the World Series. The newest national telephone survey of 560 fans found that 28% think the Halos will be the American League Champions, while 31% say the Cubs will take the National League.

Sixteen percent (16%) of baseball fans believe the Angels, who are currently on top of their division by 11.5 games, will win the World Series. The same percentage of fans (16%) says that of the Cubs. The Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908, and are currently ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers by five games in the NL central division.

Men and women have different opinions on which team will be the world champion this year. While 22% of men believe the title will go to Los Angeles, just 8% of women agree. Meanwhile, 17% of women think the reigning champion Boston Red Sox will win for the second straight year. Boston’s arch rivals, the New York Yankees, come right behind with 16% of women who think they will be the world champions for the first time since 2000. Just 10% of men think the Yanks will prevail, while 12% say that of the Sox. Eighteen percent (18%) of men think the Cubs will take home the championship to Chicago.

Coming in behind the Halos, 23% of fans think the Red Sox will be American League Champions this year, with rival Yankees falling behind at 15%. On the National League side, the Brewers and the New York Mets are tied at 12% behind the Cubs for who fans think will be champions of the league.

Not surprisingly, predictions have changed over the course of the season. Back in February, just before spring training, the plurality of voters (17%) thought the Red Sox would maintain their championship title this season, with 31% of fans who thought they would be American League champions. The Mets came in ahead of the Cubs 26% to 19% to win the National League Pennant, and were considered the NL team with the best chances of winning the World Series.

A lot of controversy has surrounded questionable calls by umpires regarding home runs this season, sparking a debate on whether instant replay should be allowed into the sport that has historically banned the practice. The latest poll found that the plurality of voters (43%) believe instant replay should be used on all calls, while 39% say it should only be used on disputed home run calls. Another 17% say they are not sure.

With the post season just around the corner, most adults aren’t tuning into baseball on a regular basis. Seventy percent (70%) of adults say they watch baseball on television rarely or never, while just 16% say they watch at least once a week.
