BOOOOO! If things that go bump in the night scare you, chances are you’re among the 23% of American adults who believe in ghosts.

Sixty-five percent (65%) don’t believe in scary spirits, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports survey. But 12% aren’t sure if ghost stories are true or not.

The percentage of men and women who believe in ghosts are virtually the same. Adults ages 30 to 39 and 65 and older are less credulous than those in other age groups.

Unmarried adults believe in apparitions more than adults who are married. Adults without children are slightly more likely to think ghosts are out there than adults with children, but maybe not if the kids have their way.

Those who work in the private sector are twice as likely as government workers to believe in ghosts.

Most adults aren't scared about kids dressing up in Halloween costumes for school. In fact, 72% think it's a good idea. Many schools are replacing the word "Halloween" with “Fall Festival” because of negative connotations some see in the long-standing holiday name, but 66% don't think a name change is necessary.

Ghosts aren't the only as-yet unprovable thing some Americans suspect is true. In May, 53% said it was likely that life exists on other planets.
