Thirty-nine percent (39%) of American adults say it is too easy to get an abortion in the United States, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Eighteen percent (18%) think it’s too hard to get an abortion, and 25% think the level of difficulty is about right. Another 18% are not sure. These numbers are down from a survey conducted in April 2007 when 45% said it was too easy to get an abortion, 22% said it was too hard and 21% said it was about right. Seventy-four percent (74%) of adults say they have known someone who has been pregnant as a teenager. Of this group, 42% believe getting an abortion is too easy, 17% said it’s too hard, while 27% thought it was about right. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced last week that there has been a jump in the teen birth rate in 26 states throughout the country. In a Rasmussen Reports survey in response to that announcement, 80% of adults said parents are responsible for teaching their children about sex. Just 11% believe schools have that responsibility. Nearly half (49%) of adults think people should wait until they get married before they have sex. Thirty-eight percent (38%) disagree, and 13% are undecided. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Thirty percent (30%) believe the availability of condoms to teenagers is about right. Similarly, 31% think it’s too easy for teenage girls to get birth control pills, but 20% say it’s too hard. Twenty-nine percent (29%) say their availability is about right. Republicans overwhelmingly feel it’s too easy to get an abortion - by a 40-point margin over Democrats. Conversely, 25% of Democrats and eight percent (8%) of Republicans think it’s too hard to get the procedure performed. A separate survey released this week found that more voters trust Democrats than Republicans on the issue of abortion. A plurality (43%) of adults between 18 and 29 agree that it’s too easy for teenagers to get condoms, more than any other age group. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of married adults feel it’s too easy, slightly more than non-married adults (32%). Again more Republicans (51%) than Democrats (30%) feel that access to condoms is too easy. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of men and 34% of women agree that obtaining condoms is too easy. There's a huge partisan divide as well over the availability of birth control pills. While 47% of Republicans believe that it’s too easy for teenager girls to get birth control pills, only 24% of Democrats say the same. Men and women under 40 are more likely to believe that getting birth control pills is too easy, compared to older Americans. Thirty-two percent (32%) of adults who have known someone as a pregnant teenager think it’s too easy to get birth control pills, 20% say it’s too hard, while 31% say it’s about right. Among all adults, 31% say it’s too easy for girls to get birth control pills, while 20% say it’s too difficult. Twenty-nine percent (29%) say access to them is about right. In an October 2007 survey, 68% of adults said parental consent should be required before birth control pills are given to students.
