With just one weekend left until Christmas Day, nearly a third of adults (31%) still have not started their holiday shopping yet. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 29% have already finished. Over the past week, just 2% have started their shopping and 7% have finished. While 34% of men haven’t started their holiday shopping yet, 28% of women report the same. Thirty percent (30%) of women say they have finished their shopping, along with 27% of men. The shopping numbers are pretty bleak for the retail sector--67% of the nation’s adults plan on spending less on gifts this holiday season, while just 11% plan on spending more. Another 19% say they will spend about the same as they did last year. Those numbers have remained fairly consistent since the beginning of the Holiday Season. One-in-five Americans (22%) say they did most of their shopping online. That figure includes 10% who did most or all of their holiday shopping online this season. Nearly half of adults (47%) say they have done none of their holiday shopping over the internet. Not surprisingly, there is a substantial age difference when it comes to online shopping, with younger adults much more likely to e-shop than their elders. A separate survey found that 69% generally say “Merry Christmas” as their holiday greeting but 71% are not offended by someone saying “Happy Holidays.” However, 37% say they would avoid shopping in a store that doesn’t say “Merry Christmas.” A week ago, 33% said they hadn’t started their shopping yet, while 22% said they already finished.
