Support for GOP Down From Earlier in the Year

For the 10th straight week, dating back to late March, support for Republicans on the Generic Congressional Ballot has stayed in the narrow range between 41% and 44%. Before that, Republican support had been slightly higher, generally 45% or 46%.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 43% of Likely U.S. Voters say they would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate, while 37% would choose the Democrat instead.

The latest numbers are from surveys conducted during the seven days ending May 29, 2011.

Republicans have a huge lead among men, but Democrats hold a four-point advantage among women. Democrats lead among voters under 40, while Republicans have the edge among older voters.

Republicans lead among voters not affiliated with either of the major parties, but 39% of that group remains either undecided or leaning towards a third-party candidate. Similarly, Democrats lead among politically moderate voters, but 29% of that group are not committed to either major party.

Just nine percent (9%) believe Congress is doing a good or an excellent job. A matchup between President Obama and a Generic Republican remains a toss-up.

Results for this survey are compiled on a full-week basis, and crosstabs for full-week results and Generic Ballot trends are available for Platinum Members only.
