What America Thinks 2014 Election Update - Week of 8/8/14

Thirty-six U.S. Senate seats are on the ballot this November. Twenty-one of them are held by Democrats and 15 by Republicans.

In Rasmussen Reports polling this week, Republican challenger Thom Tillis has edged further ahead of incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan, 45% to 40%, in North Carolina's closely-watched U.S. Senate race. North Carolina moves from a Toss-Up to Leans Republican in the Rasmussen Reports 2014 Senate Balance of Power rankings.

In our first look at the Senate race in Texas, incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn is leading Democrat David Alameel 47% to 29%. Texas is considered safe Republican in our Balance of Power rankings.

In the Texas governor’s race, Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott holds an eight-point lead over Democratic State Senator Wendy Davis. This race is rated Leans Republican.

At week’s end, the Rasmussen Senate Balance of Power Rankings show 14 races Safe Republican and six Safe Democrat. Three lean Republican, while one leans Democrat. Five races are Toss-Ups. Republicans need a net gain six seats to take control of the Senate.

For Rasmussen Reports, I’m Alex Boyer. Remember, if it’s in the news, it’s in our polls.
