Two-thirds (66%) of American voters are confident that ballots were properly counted on Election Day and the proper candidates were declared the winners (see crosstabs). A Rasmussen Reports survey found that 15% are not very confident about vote counting. Eight percent (8%) have no confidence in the process. Democrats (69%) are slightly more confident in the integrity of the ballot process than Republicans (64%). There is a strong correlation between confidence and income. Thirty-five percent (35%) of respondents earning incomes of less than $20,000 annually were not confident that their votes were properly allocated on Election Day. In sharp contrast, only 5% of those with incomes over $100,000 per year express distrust in the voting system. Twelve percent (12%) of voters say they personally know someone who believes his or her vote was not properly counted on Election Day. Seventy-four percent (74%) are not aware of any such instances. Thirteen percent (13%) believe that a large number of eligible voters were denied the right to vote. Fourteen percent (14%) believe the reverse took place and that ineligible voters were able to cast a vote. While American voters have some confidence in the 2006 voting process, the same can’t be said about the current Congress. Just 15% believe that Congress is doing a good or an excellent job.
