58% Have Unfavorable Opinion of Cheney, 54% Say the Same About Gingrich

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of American voters have an unfavorable opinion of Vice President Dick Cheney. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 39% have a favorable opinion.

The results are similar for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The man who led Republicans to victory in 1994 is now viewed favorably by 37% of American voters and unfavorably by 54%. Feeling about Gingrich, however, are less intense. While 39% have a Very Unfavorable opinion of Cheney, only 25% say the same about Gingrich.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Cheney while 59% say the same about Gingrich. Seventy-three percent (73%) of Democrats have an unfavorable opinion of Cheney and 73% of unaffiliateds say the same. Gingrich is viewed unfavorably by 65% of Democrats and 60% of unaffiliateds.

The current House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, is currently viewed favorably by 40% of Americans.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is viewed favorably by 44% of voters and unfavorably by 31%. Twenty-five percent (25%) don’t know enough to have an opinion one way or the other. Roberts is viewed favorably by 57% of Republicans and 25% of Democrats. Among those not affiliated with either major political party, 41% offer a positive assessment of the nation’s top judge.

It is interesting to note that Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain attracts far less partisan responses than Cheney, Gingrich, or even Roberts. The man once dubbed the GOP frontrunner by pundits is viewed favorably by 48% of voters and unfavorably by 44%. He earns favorable reviews from 54% of Republicans, 43% of Democrats, and 46% of unaffiliated voters. Negative reviews on McCain are offered by 40% of Republicans, 47% of Democrats, and 43% of unaffiliated voters.

McCain is currently struggling in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination.
