Given America’s current economic problems and its foreign policy entanglements, voters overwhelmingly want to see bipartisanship at play in Washington, D.C. Seventy percent (70%) of U.S. voters say it is Very Important for incoming President Barack Obama work with Republicans, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Another 21% say it is somewhat important. Just three percent (3%) say bipartisanship is not important at all. Investors think working with the GOP is even more essential. Seventy-five percent (75%) say its Very Important for Obama to work with the opposing party, as opposed to 63% of non-investors. In a survey earlier this week, 45% said Obama will govern as a partisan Democrat, while 40% expected him to govern on a bipartisan basis. Two days after Election Day, voters were evenly divided over whether politics in Washington will become more cooperative despite Obama’s call for change from business as usual. Sixty-two percent (62%) say Obama should include Republicans in his Cabinet, although 15% disagree. Twenty-two percent (22%) are undecided. Fifty-nine percent (59%) also say Democrats should allow Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, the independent Democrat who supported John McCain in the presidential race, to remain as chairman of a major committee. Twenty-seven percent (27%) oppose keeping Lieberman on as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and 14% aren’t sure. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Sign up now. Eighty-seven percent (87%) of Republicans naturally think it is Very Important for Obama to work with the GOP, a view that is shared by 69% of unaffiliated voters and only 58% of Democrats. But another 31% of Democrats rate bipartisanship as at least somewhat important. About two-thirds of Republicans, Democrats and unaffiliateds agree that Obama should include Republicans in his Cabinet. Only 44% of government employees like that idea, however. Late last month, 53% of voters told Rasmussen Reports that presidential candidates should announce at least some of their Cabinet choices before an election to help voters make a more informed decision. Democrats are much more unforgiving about Lieberman than they are about the opposing party. Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Republicans and 68% of unaffiliated voters say Democrats should allow the Connecticut senator to remain as a committee chairman. Only 37% of Democrats agree, while 46% say he should not be allowed to stay on as chairman. Sixty-two percent (62%) of men and 56% of women think Lieberman should keep his chairmanship.
